Two days had passed and Laura had developed a serious case of cabin fever; the digital jigsaw puzzles were done, she’d flown through most of the books from Mrs. Fitzpatrick, and there was little else to keep her mind engaged. The policewoman offered to play cards with her.

“You don’t want to play against me,” Laura warned her. She got up and paced the room. “When’s Sergeant Fitzpatrick stopping by?”

“Around six. We stay here until then. Can you read one of these other books Mrs. Fitzpatrick sent over for you?”

“I suppose so,” Laura replied, plopping onto the couch and ending her pacing the room. She picked one from the top of the second pile, opened it, and stared at the words but saw none of them because her mind was still going gangbusters about the two pieces of furniture stolen from her shop and the warning. The two pieces had to be from the same family and it had to be the family she’d heard about, and very likely connected with the scrap of paper she had found in the dresser and the magazine article. It was all too much of a coincidence.

But then there was the coded threat against the Rage family, in the cleverly arranged figurines and knickknacks left behind by the thief. That made no sense whatever. How could they possibly be connected with the furniture or the family from Eagle Junction? Who in Eagle Junction would care about the Rage family? Most of the townsfolk probably hadn’t even heard of the Rages. And what if no one had figured the code out? Maybe it meant nothing, but maybe it did. She wanted to think it was just someone who had heard the rumors and thought it would make a good joke if anyone figured it out.

She turned the page and aimed her face at the text on the left. Of course, it would have taken two strong men to carry out the solid mahogany chest of drawers. She couldn’t see the boy from the lost family having any close friends, especially if he was the one who started fires. On the other hand, maybe he was a sociopath, made friends easily. You never knew. Or perhaps he’d found someone to help him out, giving the person slick lies to cover the real purpose of his break-in and theft. Maybe he threatened or blackmailed someone into helping him. Maybe one of them knew about the legend and thought leaving the coded message was funny.

She aimed her eyes at the page on the right. That actually made more sense when she thought about it. Perhaps the Claypoole boy, now a man, and whether or not he was the good one or the bad one, was tracking down the furniture he’d had as a boy, in some warped way of trying to re-build his childhood home. Aunt Rose had always said that nothing good ever came from living in the past; you always had to move forward. Perhaps Claypoole was just that—stuck in the past and trying to go back to a happier time in his life.
